This week my "Companion Animal Management" students
watched the documentary--Dealing
Dogs. It was a notorious
kennel that gathered dogs and sold them for reseach, etc.
The person in charge was a "Class B Dealer".
Here is the entire documentary:
Dealing Dogs-(beware--some F words
used in the documentary)
And here are some related links about the kennel and the Animal Welfare
Act:
We had 3 great puppies visit classes this week.
We learn about normal puppy behavior, reactions to vaccinations,
what to feed, genetics, what makes a good treat, etc..............
Mawi-she was a great visitor (I was too busy to make a little video)
:((((((
If you are not familiar with the famous fox selection study conducted
in Siberia
you should read/view the links below. It proves that selection for
behavior
(friendliness and aggressiveness in this case) can work. In other
words, the behavior
of animals can change (over generations) by selecting for the behavior
you want.
A long running experiment
Keeping big dogs cool in the summer takes special skills.
I once had to keep big Newfies (180# and 160#) cool in 98F weather
as they traveled in a pickup bed through the Dakota Badlands to a
funeral.
After living with those Newfies (Onyx and Bella), I am pretty much
an expert on how to keep giant dogs cool in hot weather.
Baking beef heart for dog food. Cut into pieces and one hour at 350 F.
You will never see leaner meat. I save the pan juices for the dogs also.
I put a little
granulated garlic and rosemary leaves on the pieces.
I keep this special thermometer in my work van. Look at the 131 F
temperature
that was reached in early May when outside temp was about 80 F. This
thermometer
records low, high, and current temps and humidity. The low and high in
the past 24 hours.
It was not on the dash. It was measuring cabin temps in a large van.
Goats and other visitors to my classes recently.
Every once in awhile we have high school students and their parents
visit also.
I usually don't photograph human visitors.

We had 5 wonderful dog visitors this week in my classes.
We discussed their breeds, behavior, training, etc.
We even did a DNA swab on Shadow. We know his mom
is a chocolate lab but the father is completely unknown.
We will see what the DNA results show (his breed makeup).
Today in Animal Health Management we had a pop quiz.
Just one question--Tell me about Lochia.
Anything: definition,
what you remember from other classes, etc.
Write something down even if it is a WAG.
(We have not discussed it yet in this class,
so I was looking for prior learning or experience).
It was just for fun-no names were
put on the answers handed-in.
This past week was busy with many animal visitors in my 3 classes (160
students total).
When the animals come to class, we talk about animal behavior,
diets, health, genetics, how people should interact
with the visiting animals, etc. We also discuss any health issues
that the animal may have, etc. The animals below visited this past week.
The Bearded Dragon Peetree:
The Bearded Dragon Drogon:
Royal and Maverick-2 complete strangers until we introduced them today.
Two Boxers-Maverick and Dinozzo (they are roommates).
They enjoyed the bull pizzle treats.
Then the beautiful Artemis.

I have been dogless for about a year.
So it was time and destiny recently provided puppies.
I plan to start a separate puppy blog where I make comments
on diet, vacinnations, deworming, etc. They were born 6-12-17.

Blue and Grace-therapy dogs in training (visited today).
Full of life.
Sophie visited this
afternoon. We learned about her breed combo (Greyhound X
Yellow Lab). And we learned she was rescued from people who
fight dogs (not 100% sure about that). She was probably destined to be attacked by
fighting dogs. A portion of her tongue was cut off to mark her as a bait
dog. This is disgusting.
Sophie liked the bull pizzle treat.
Look at her tongue!!!!

The Hoosier Horse Fair is always a great event. Starts Friday, 3/31.
More and more companies
are popping up that make better quality
pet food (e.g., not using meat meal-a rendered product containing mammal
tissue). See the section entitled Ingredient List at the FDA.
Maybe things have changed
since 1995, but
read the first paragraph in Section 2.1
from this EPA publication.
I ran into this well designed site in the U.K. that does a good job of
explaining their pet food ingredients. Lily's
Kitchen.
Amos is lucky to be alive! Just rescued this weekend in OH.
Don't feed him too much at the beginning.
There is a proper protocol to follow for animals in this condition.

Mugsy the Puggle (Pug X Beagle) visited us this morning.
He looks good for 9 years old.
Our class mascot, Bruiser, was also present today.
Mugsy interacted with everyone.
Mugsy meets Bruiser--no problem.
Mugsy took a selfie.
Then in the afternoon, we had a Papillon and a Border Terrier.
This is Samwise the Papillon.
And this is Keifer the Border Terrier.
Keifer flying through the air!!!
And sleeping Samwise..........Sh...Sh....Sh....Sh....

Buster, a Pit Bull cross paid us a visit today.
He was awesome. 5 years old but we know nothing of his history.
He was adopted just 3 weeks ago by one of my students.
We plan to do a swab DNA test on him to determine background.
Friendly!!!!!
Did I say friendly????
And he likes massages!

We had 2 beautiful St. Bernard crosses in class today.
This is Honey-(female)
This is Blockhead-(male)
Everyone coming into the classroom had to pass the sniff test.
They were obtained from an animal shelter at one year of age.
They are now 9 years old. They may be litter mates but no one knows for
sure.
We plan to do a DNA test kit on them as a class project.

Rats can swim up your
toilet. This actually happened
to one of my workers when we were working cattle some years ago.
There is a good documentary on Pit Bulls (showing below) that I use in
one class.
It interviews many owners in CA involved with Pit Bulls.
My favorite owner (and one that has loads of dog sense)
is Leri Hansen. Listen carefully to what she says. It is spot on.
Don't miss the 600 comments at the bottom of the article.

Kairi visited today-Siberian Husky. She has a GPS tracking device on
her collar-so if she escapes from her yard,
a message will be sent to the owner's smart phone-the message will
indicate the location of Kairi.
Kairi drove down today from northern IN.

I had a wonderful time at the goat show in Kentland.
The following pictures show how much fun I had.
These were the breed of goats.....Miniature Silky Fainting Goats
They love to have their picture taken.
They showed goats and a judge was present. Ribbons were awarded.
Some people brought their pups-4 month old Golden here.
Is this hair long enough????
This was a rescued Dobbie. We interacted a lot and became friends.
These goats had never met this women before! But were instant friends.
This is Claire. A past favorite student who lives in the area of the
goat show.
My aunt was here also showing goats--this is one of hers.
This weekend I am going to a goat show in Kentland, IN. I'll post
pictures when I get back.
There will be Fainting Goats there. It's a genetic disorder termed
myotonia congenita.
We had 2 dog visitors today in a class. Isabel (white) is a pointer mix
who is almost 13 years old. She is looking very good for 13.
Clover (brown) is a Bull Dog/Beagle mix who is almost one year old.
Everyone enjoys the pets that come to class. We learn about breeds,
behavior,
health issues and how to interact with animals.
We had an exam today, maybe Bruiser helped with a few
answers! The dogs did not bother him.
Imagine, we had 2 dogs and one Bearded Dragon in the class at the same
time.
Clover and Isabel helped with crowd control! We have a very relaxed
class environment.
Taylor Swift stopped by to interact with the dogs! Well, it kind of
looks like Taylor from this angle!
We had 2 Chinese Crested Dogs in class today!!!!
Many of us had never seen one up close.....
Molly on the left, Zoe on the right! Oh, yea, Austin in the center!
They both enjoyed interacting with everyone. Very friendly, very loving.
These are called the naked dogs-this is Zoe...Good view of nakedness!
Austin also talked about his cat, Hinkley (a Himalayan cat).
Austin's parents brought all three of these pets to class.
Many thanks to Austin's parents!!! His parents stayed for the entire
class.
Wags was fun to have in class (maybe a little intimidated,
but there were a lot of students in the room....)
Wags is a Dachshund.
Wags helped us learn about the location of the popliteal lymph node.
Shadow and Stella made a return visit but came to a different class.
They helped us learn about arthritis and how nutrition influences dog
health.
Koby, the Australian Shepherd
(has had bilateral CCL surgeries, this is
similar to ACL surgery in humans)
Some students are bringing hammocks to campus for relaxation!
This student was relaxing (and studying) between classes.
It also was her birthday!

These 2 wonderful animals visited a class today.
Holly (on left) and Breezy.
Holly is a Australian Shepherd cross
and Breezy is a Golden Retriever.
Breezy is a Therapy Dog.
Taking a break from running around. It didn't last long!

Had great visits today with these wonderful animals:
Lola the Lab mix, had to greet all 90 of us.
Lola gave everyone special attention. Dogs will lower your
blood pressure and reduce stress.
Eddie the Corgi. His family moved back to China recently
and they could not take Eddie along. Luckily, a student adopted
him 3 days ago. He had spent 4 years with his first family.
Eddie likes treats and attention.
Eddie will accept belly rubs from perfect strangers!
I was unable to take a picture of the tiger salamander
that came to class today-so here is a stock photo of one.
Then I met a Virginia Opposum! They only live 3 years. This guy is 2.
Then I met a 40 lb. Boa!!!!! They can live up to 30 or so years.

These two beauties (Australian Shepherds) visited a class today.
We learned about their care and concerns about breeding to avoid
genetic defects.
